Just finished Colin Frys book - 'Secrets From the Afterlife'.   Quite an interesting read though not as good as I thought it would be.

Now reading an old book I picked up at a charity car boot sale, 'Churchill - By His Contemporaries'.  Been meaning to read this one for a while, but the wife just bought me the new Theo Pathitis book, so might end up reading that one first.

I just reread "Stalins Ghost - Martin Cruz Smith" an investigator Renko novel of which there are :

Gorky Park
Polar Star
Red Square
Havana Bay
Wolves eat Dogs
Stalins Ghost

It is to his usual standards, as Renko is assigned the job on investigation the appearance of Stalin on the Moscow Metro, an investigation that raises any number of personal and historical ghosts.

I think it is important to be reading something, even if it is only half a page a day before bed.

I was right, I knew I had to read 'Enter The Dragon' by Theo Paphitis, so I did lol

I have just finished it, quite an interesting read as it goes, some good business advice in there too.

Just bought a few more books, so got a bit of a backlog to get through...today I added 'Al Quaeda' by Jason Burke, and 'A Good War' by Patrick Bishop to my collection.

About half way through 'A Good War' by Patrick Bishop, and I have to say it is a thoroughly well researched book and written in such a way that it gives a real insight into how life was for our pilots during the Battle of Britain, in the pub with friends, then a few hours later struggling fighting for your life watching your friends and comrades killed.

Have to say it is probably the best war fiction I have ever read as far as research goes, though the storyline is going a bit girly in that there is romance in it which isn't my cup of tea tbh, but it does give a glimpse into how people conducted relationships back then (pretty much same as now but people hid it more).

If you've got a spare few quid I recommend it (I got it from Asda, can't remember now but I don't think it was much more than £7 or so)

I finished A Good War, and I have to say it was a good book, good storyline if not a slightly anti-climactic ending, though I definitely recommend it.

Started reading 'Al Quaeda' by Jason Burke which is a factual account of what Al Quaeda actually is.  I was very disappointed, it is one of those books where the research shows.  He knows his stuff, but he goes on and on and on about things that just don't matter.  I once read a book about how to write books and one of the big no noes is having your research show itself.

It was so full of clutter that I found it unreadable so I have put it back on the shelf.

Picked up 'Hard Times' by Charles Dickens.  Guaranteed quality

Read a little bit of the official ubuntu book yesterday. Does make me mad it was in the "Windows" section. Surprisingly there was quite a few linux books. I would of got the ubuntu one but in 5 months it would be obsolete.

What were these books like?  Do you recommend them?  What genre is it (fantasy/horror/sci-fi etc)?

You have to be really careful with PC books, they are very expensive and some just regurgitate the existing manuals and are padded beyond belief, let alone the problem with obsolescence.

When I glance up from here I see "Windows programming power with custom controls" which was close to a big project saver for me, a day out to a decent bookstore to find a book that saved months of work! So the exceptions are out there.
