good practice is to delete such accounts. But if a hack is possible is happens without fanfare! as such this is basically bollux.

All ready a thread about this to me seems like just another scare, just like all the msn ones and emails that come though nearly every week

If you spot a bot, delete it. They are crap on your site

But don't think they lay you wide open for hacking, think about it logically and you would realise that you don't achieve a "mass hack" by pre-announcing/creating the accounts You would create and hack all at once.

That is the reason I haven't announced my plans for world domination!
1. Because I've not completed the plans.
2. Because that would send a message out to the world and it would mean me being chased as a super criminal. My take over will, sorry... WOULD be peaceful when, sorry IF I do it.

I delete all bots, It may add to your membership figures but when someone sees you have 3000 members and 1000 posts they will know not to bother joining as it is an inactive forum.

you did remember the old funtklakow thread?

yes sgt there is that but there's also the fact that if you have some members that post a lot it might not be too bad as people think there's a bigger community and sign up. all down to you situation really.

If you are desperate for a "bigger" image, sign up a few dummy accounts yourself and post from them. Anyone joining can see the memberlist and if they see bots they will assume rightly that your forum is badly maintained.

This might be a silly question, so sorry if it is. How would I know if one of my members was a bot?

I just had a bizarre image of making everyone take an "are you human" test, but failing that, is there any way of telling?

also if they post the same things over again or don't post at all there's very likely.
