We have always had a policy of concentrating on system level backups, rather than individual forum backups and hence have never offered the facilty to recover broken forums.
However we have now scripted some utilities that will be able to recover forums from daily backups up to a week prior to the current backup.
This will still require time and effort (about 30 minutes) for a circumstance that should never be allowed to arise. Forum owners need to take a lot of care when picking who they give power to.
So should we make this feature available and should we charge for it? We have our own views on this, and this is not a "democratic" decision, but input would be appreciated. _________________ Family Friendly Shareware | | Web Design/Services | Free Forums
A lesson in choosing a mod / co-admin that wrecks a forum is a harsh one anyway but people continue to take on Mods / Co-admins that they hardly know. If forum owners had to pay for a system restore it would reinforce the point that Mods and Co-admins should ONLY be appointed when they have a proven track record AND are trusted 100%.
We have said time and time again about the danger of appointing friends and 'he was the first person to join my forum so I made him co-admin' etc If it costs, perhaps some people will be a little more willing to listen and heed advice.
£5-£10 for a system restore would be expensive enough to teach a lesson yet cheap enough that it wouldn't be beyond the pocket money price. _________________

Quick look busy, admin is coming
If it's a rogue mod or admin, I think it should be chargeable. It does sound like a useful feature that would be good to have, but I don't see why it should be free. After all, you've effectively got to spend 30 minutes' time and effort sorting out what is really someone else's problem.
I never cease to be amazed by people who give forum powers to random people they've never spoken to before. _________________
I would agree charge them for this service the young kids on here must understand that giving mod and admin power to anyone that shouts for it is a bad idea. _________________
Okay, I think sgst has made an important point about pocket money, and we are not out to be over severe here.
Without going into details of our backup regime, as details only tend to help those with malicious ideas, one of the time issues was that the database backups were offsite and for this and other reasons not very accessible.
Backups have now been tweaked, so while they are still offsite, copies of the database data are also retained on the server. This will trim some significant time off the work involved in a restore.
This in turn allows us to set a fee of £10 which is within reach of pocket money, whilst still actually paying for the time involved, so we are not subsidising stupidity.
£10 will cover time and teach an important lesson. I can give an easy way to avoid the charge... Vet your Mods very carefully and DON'T have more than one admin, NO Co-admins! follow that and you'll never have to pay for a restore _________________

I know how badly it can affect your forum if you hire the wrong mod, so please learn a lesson from my mistakes, I decided to close my the4aces forum because of one of my mistakes in hiring a mod who went on a mass deleting spree. I think you should defintly charge for this as it would make people more careful in hiring mods. _________________ Buy my brand new Poetry Collection book today for just £3.99 (or £1.50 for the eBook version.)
Q) Is it possible to pay like £20 a year, then you can have a link in your forum admin, which will take you to somewhere where you can download a backup of your forum, so if a crazy admin goes crazy and deletes every forum, you can upload the backup copy of the forum, that gets updated every Monday, Wendesday, Friday, And Sunday from your personal computer say?
Q) How often will the backups be updated?
Q) So say all my forums go, every user, every post. If I pay you £10 could you put the forum back into its original state?
There is a bit of a contradiction inherent in a process available for restoration from the admin panel, as in the event of a rogue admin doing damage, they could also use such a facility to confuse the heck out of things
Also for common sense security reasons, the forums haven't got the priviledges required to see where the backups are, so that also rules it out.
Given this should be a very rare thing anyway, I think it is easiest and safest to keep it the way we are setting it up, at least for now.
Like a redirecting mail thingy. For the people that buy a "product thing" from me, which gets them over 500 clicks, that means they get loads of credits for this site, At the moment they sent it threw the site www.swapitshop.com , But its double postage, and takes longer. And theres rumours on the forum of the site staff stealing items going threw the Sites post room lol. Anyway, Say, People were to send money to something like:
