Following the chronic failure of another free forums system, and the exposure that they had not backed up for 3 weeks or more and that their RAID system that should protect against drive failure did not (I'm skeptical it existed). It is time to remind people of our own regime.

We have RAID5, a drive can go and speed will be effected whilst it is replaced and rebuilt, but you will lose nothing. This has actually happened last year.

Databases have a full backup to offserver done daily, plus weekly offsite.

All other files have a full offserver backup weekly, with offserver incrementals daily plus a full weekly offsite.

This is about as safe as you can practically get, and people can testify we do recover forums from the backups.

Backups are also retained for a considerable time.

As you know i have been following the said mentioned hosts for sometime now, and its not a pretty picture at all, the support forum is littered with complaints about,

Downtime

forums lost

bad support

And now no backups for 3 weeks which means anyone who started a forum in this time and spent hours on it have lost it for good thats it,, oh there response is
Quote:
sorry about that cant be helped
.

I will not discuss to much for oblivious reasons but will say when someone says free but then expects you to pay for any type of hacks on your forum and pay for any extras and even try and make you pay for faster support questions to be answered, then the word FREE seems to mean you have the basic subsilver forum and be done with it anything else costs you,, doesn't seem FREE TO ME.

Hmmm ok we do not make or expect anyone to pay for answering support questions faster, i think we answer support questions extremely quickly and free.

Plus of course you have the bonus of 3 extra sites

1. HOWTODOIT

2. PORTALOGY

3.CGArts

We may make you search for an answer and may expect you to do some of the work yourself on here but what would you rather ????

Answers on a postcard please.

The backup regime is one of those quiet behind the scenes issues that is actually really quite hard to do right, and to do at a level that combines performance, reliability and affordablity. I would have to say that backups are the issue that have caused me to lose most sleep of any issue in the time since myff was created.
Even now with a system that has successfully recovered many many forums when their owners have broken them, it continues to bother me, and well it should!
But whilst no one can claim to be immune, running merely a monthly backup system is nothing short of a gross dereliction of responsibility Even if they can recover, you cannot trust people who knowingly run a regime like that.

A further update on backups.

The weekly offsite system has now been improved further, as the offsite now go to a RAID1 disk, at a week old the backups are then offsited from there to another repository, and that repository gets a daily tape backup.

As already pointed out, the previous regime was already pretty decent, but this new regime should satisfy even the most paranoid
