This can't be done by using the portal tutorial Here

I believe there is a way to do this, I'll work on it and inform you if it works and I'll try and get a walkthrough up as well.

I have found a way to hide the portal when you are a guest, but when logged in, it screws everything up.

Viper already worked it out, sort of

I'm still gonna tweak it as it's for a login box.

The login box disappears when logged in and the other portals move up, I will hopefully get it to switch over to the who's online info when logged in. hopefully admin will improve upon what I'll finish up with.

I have had problems with switches myself Some of it may be that switches will only ever work in certain contexts. This is down to the phpbb template code. We have done a little keyhole surgery on this code to make the portal work, but we would be foolish to try and completely rewrite it.
We have to find a good compromise between adding the facilities and keeping the code as close to stand phpbb as possible.
If that means some tricks with switches are not possible, then that is something we may have to live with.
phpbb has a whole community dedicated to maintaining the code, we are close enough to standard to be a part of that. If we were to drift too far, then we would have much more work to do!

Done it, and it all seems to work fine (from what I can see). It can be seen Here. Use:

Username: test
Password: test

to log in.

the switches are a lot less certain than using:

<!-- IF USER_LEVEL_FLAG != -1 -->
content
<!-- ENDIF -->
to see if someone is logged in.
