What you see is a popup note placed in a post with a bbcode, this sort of thing will have a place in the new Wiki forums., but plainly there is a fair bit of scope for more uses.

It uses a bbcode of the name "note" at the moment. But I can see:

1) Note that only appear when viewing the wiki editing page.
2) Notes that appear to all users.
3) Notes that are only visible to mods and admins.

It would be good to explore this idea fully both in terms of what can be done and what the bbcode names should be for this.

I think note fits, and maybe having an option, or being able to do like [note= and 1 or 2, 1 for all users 2 for admin/mod only, or just a separate bbcode for mod notes.  But most likely I think just being available for everybody would fit better.

the question is around clarity. I don't think  [note= 1] is clear at all

for that matter I am not impressed with my own ideas on this hence asking!

I don't see a whole lot of need for the note at all though.  I mean, questioning could be done differently, but the note just seems superfluous.

In a forum in general I agree it is not very important. In a wiki system it is different.

The answer does pop out and is quite obvious. We already have the "mod" bbcode feature, where bbcodes with a mod prefix are exclusive to mods and admins and lock a post from edits by non mods.

As such we have to maintain the same logic. So we now have three new bbcodes (not installed yet)

note
modnote
wikinote

I need to tweak the bbcode portal to allow people to choose their own css for these if they want.

I have been playing a bit more and have decided that by and large if you are editing a wiki you really will want to see the notes all the time, the popup format is a pain.

So we now have:

note - a yellow inline note
popupnote - pops up on mouse over of a * see screenshot.
wikinote - only visible when viewing wiki edits.
modnote - only visible to mods.
