PostPosted: Wed Oct 18, 2006 5:17 pm    Post subject: Forum spammers Reply with quote

I run a nice little forum and since a couple of days ago we have an idiot who is signing up with different nicknames and posting nothing else but porn links and links to malware sites.
This person is posting via proxy IPs so the only thing I can do is to ban the IP/nickname and delete the posts.
I was also deleting the users but now I'm keeping them and moving one subject/offender in a special section of the forum so I keep the IP and time - to report to a ISP if found.
Is it possible to somehow delete a user and all his posts with on ore two mouse clicks and not to search for posts and delete one by one?
Also I have noticed that people can signup even if they submit a fake email address. Is it possible to change that somewhere (to open an email takes at least a minute or two, so it's at least a little obstacle for a spammer).
Thank you for looking.

You should certainly set to user activation and then ban the email addresses if a problem occurs. That will stop them in their tracks. It won't be worth the effort.

Thanks a lot - I have done that now. I have also seen the option where admin has to confirm the new member, so in case this guy persists on spamming, I will just turn on that option.
GREAT, thanks!

There is also a button you can click when editing in their profile to delete them. That should delete all their posts also. Like Admin said though the best thing to do is have user registrey. That would be the best thing, and then they cant just use an email that is fake.

From the deletions I made these days (if I remember correctly) if I delete a user his posts remain with his name being changed into "guest". But I will confirm that if somebody like that starts to spam again (if I'm wrong I will be very happy).
So far it seems the obligation to register via a valid email address is having a positive effect.

It will have a positive effect. Even though you users can still sign up with dumb names, they cant ever post. Then all you have to do is delete that user and your forum still looks good.

You are right about the changing it to guest thing because it does do that. I didnt know that MYFF didnt have the hack for that yet. I may suggest it!

There has just been a silly username registered - the same kind of username as were those from which the forum has been spammed. No posts yet...

If you have someone that is going to spam it is highly unlikely that they will spam when you are on. The best thing to do, and what I do if I fear an attack coming, is go invisible and then wait for it to happen and nip it in the bud.

Delete all posts by a user, certainly has merit as an idea. Though does need to be handled with care. It is generally only sensible when deleting spammers.

I was looking at that hack for the site I told you about Admin and thought about suggesting it here. It would be good for Spammers as you said yes.

I agree - I'm always using the invisible mode when I'm acting as an admin.

I can not seem to find it again. I know it is there because I read it, but I am not finding it again. If I find it I will suggest it, but I just cant find it

I agree. It is not in my interest members would see me as a despot because they would all abandon the forum. On the other hand a single spammer can create a large number of posts while you are not looking and it can be quite painfull to delete them one by one afterwards.

I think an addition to mass delete users adding options:

Mass Delete Users
Mass Delete Users and Delete their posts
Mass Delate Users nd Delete their posts and ban their email address

along with a "Filter" field to allow you to find the users quicker is the way to go.
