With a few changes in the way the server is being operated now in place, it is time to revisit some other configuration changes.
In the past these changes whilst improving performance a little, also proved unstable and had a badly adverse effect on backup speed.
I don't hold out too much hope, but it has to be tried.

What with all the spambot crap going on I have been taking this very slowly. But we do seem to be operating stably at the 20,000 level, tomorrow assuming we are still okay I will up to 25,000. In the past it was something like 35,000 where problems were clear cut. _________________

Raising to 35,000 once again created problems, even at 30,000 the backup was show pretty clear signs of slowing.
So that's that experiment for another year!
