From when we install the forum management updates planned for Saturday, you will find when you login to your forum at:
http://www.myfreeforum.org/
a new item called "footer html" here you can easily enter chat box scripts etc, and they will appear at the very bottom of the page.

As an important note on this, the foot is for all pages. But you can for example have:
<script>
if (window.location.href=="http://forum.myfreeforum.org/index.php")
{
}
</script>
to restrict something to in that case the index page. _________________

What is a "chat box script". I am assuming it is a link to some chat room feature?
If so, where does one find such a thing? Any suggestions? Thanks! _________________

I did google for it and found it easily. I will wait for Saturday's upgrade, and then try it out. I suppose I could try it out earlier at my website.
Thanks
P.S.
I create a page at my site, just to try out the CBOX code.
http://toosmallforsupernova.org/cbox.htm
It seems to let me login as any name, with a valid email address, and post messages. So I guess anyone bringing up that page, could post, and all people would see it. I must experiment when I have someone on line that I know.
It is sort of interesting to note that, upon revisiting that page, my earlier posts from my test are still visible. I would have thought that they would disappear.
(edited 11/5/05) Above was posted yesterday. Today, I revisited my cbox and notice that someone was kind enough to visit and test it. The messages do indeed stay there. When I log into my cbox account as admin, it gives me a control panel which allows me to delete/prune posts. What I have is the free version, which seems pretty good as it. I notice in the control panel that there is a way to EXPORT all posts and download them to a file. That is quite impressive. I did not try it, so possibly, when I do try it, I will discover that it only works for the $2/month paid upgrade version. They mentioned that the free version has advertising, but I have yet to see that. Perhaps popup blocker have something to do with that, not sure.
Here is the longest post possible with cbox (I did this as a test):
I wonder what a very long message looks like? aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaassssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssdddddddddddddddddddddddddddffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffggggggggggggggggggglongest possible
Which seems like appx 180 characters, but hard to count.
So, I guess the big advantage to something like cbox is that it is close to real time chat for members who are logged in at the same time, but without the hassel of things like Yahoo chat, ICQ, AIM, MSN, or IRC, where both people need to be using the same program, and logged in. But I suppose if two or more people REALLY wanted to chat at length, then they would find it easier to use MSN or Yahoo or AIM.
As I said, one advantage of CBOX seems to be that it leaves an audit trail indefinitely, for others to browse after you have logged off. So in that sense it is like a thread at a message board, permanent, but it is more real time than two people on line at once trying to PM in the message board, or reply to one another in threads. Message board thread conversation is more like postal chess games, where someone makes their move every day, or every other day. _________________

|
|
I am pleased with the Custom Footer ability. I used it to install CBOX chat box. I am sure there are many other uses for footer html besides a chat box.
I find it very easy to log into the myfreeforum.org account and modify the footer html. The html is visible on most pages of my message board, at the very bottom, which is handy if someone is using CBOX chat box. I have not had much activity so far with the chat box.
I go into yahoo chat rooms for literature and also professors and study groups each day, and usually add one or two people to my buddy list, and of course, they tend to visit my message board at some point.
I think that the key to growing a message board is persistence over months or even years. It is not going to grow by itself, or overnight. _________________
