We only started at the end of May last year, and have not to be honest been taking what you might call an aggressive approach to growth.
The idea was always to be better for our members than other free systems and hence taking it a little slow was always going to be how we did it.

and i'm proud to say that my place has contributed very much to that 1 million, we've only been going since august and it still takes me by surprise how successful its been

Well over 10,000 but mostly they are dead, in a system that lets you set up a forum in seconds that in inevitable. I could of course have let this continue and by now be "claiming" we have maybe 20,000 forums ( and a big mailing list for us to spam ) but that is not really what we are about.

I guess then that that number will be drastically reduced once the forum 'cull" is complete, right? Actually, from what I've seen, it appears that the cull will be an ongoing thing that will never stop, because, as you said, most people don't bother actually drawing people to their forum, so the forums die, and that means more inactive, serverspace-wasting forums to chuck out.
