It is now 4 years since myff launched.
To recap a little history, a little over four years ago, the parent company MarsJupiter LTD was providing a healthy income, but none of the new projects were getting anywhere fast
I had just taken rather a long sabbatical you might say, dedicating almost all my time and effort to the not for profit community site downsizer.net, all very worthy and something I am incredibly proud to have thought up and been a part of but all the same not something that could ever pay any bills as it is strictly volunteer work.
Now part of downsizer is a forum, and people on forums have this nasty habit of wanting their own forums One member was having trouble with a free forum causing me to look at her forum and from there the general free forums market, clearly not only did lots of people want lots of forums, but what they almost always (if not always always) got was rotten to the core.
I could not envisage coding and running anything that would not easily be better than what people were getting. Even if we ended up "bad" we would still be "better".
So about one or two weeks later I had a system coded, and a server rented.
The system was phpbb2 with an in house management system, not some "off the shelf" free forums system. Those systems are part of why free systems are generally so bad.
There was no template editing in those days, if you wanted a logo you provided it and I create template for people manually
That of course was rather good for users in some ways, but also plainly unsustainable.
There was a reason for doing that way though, because whilst you could find "hacks" to let people replace phpbb logos, such hack were inherently limited, from the start I wanted a system that would offer people a whole lot more.
6 months of so later, we gave people full template editing
6 months after that the first tentative "portals" appeared.
Key to a lot of this were the moderators providing their time freely to help members and give feedback on the system, as well as their efforts (Symon in particular) with writing guides, guides that frequently needed updating when features were tweaked. Without the moderators we would not have done anywhere near as well
Key also was the fact that money could be thrown into servers to keep everything running reasonable well. Most free forums systems die in the face of popularity as advertising revenues on forums are really quite woeful. You need a deep pocket and a long term commitment to survive.
So where are we now?
Firstly and most importantly for all our sakes, is that we are running a service that is in the black, it may ease our way forward if people put money into the server appeal, but we are not about to collapse if they don't.
Secondly, we are still developing the system. People waiting for one thing or another (and there is always a list) should take heart in reading the announcements, there is a steady flow of new features and that will continue.
Of special interest at the moment is the "CATALOG" portal that allows things like recipe databases to be easily added to forums. I'm hoping to make this live in a few weeks, please be patient on that one, it is running on downsizer.net currently and it is best to get it fully tested before adding it everywhere.
There are still features like "delete posts, when a user is deleted" that will be added to the phpbb2 system, and work is occurring to get phpbb3 up to speed with extra features. That work though has a little hold on it currently as the next official phpbb3 release is due and there is little point in having to sets of changes to integrate at once.
Anyhow, last but not least my thanks to our members for using the service and being patient when the occasional hiccup occurs.

This really is an amazing system, and I TRULY appreciate everything you do here admin!
You're a great person and you had a great idea to get this going and you've handled it superbly. The T&C is fair and how you deal with forums is outstanding. Whilst I have no direct PHP control over my forum I truly feel like I am the one running it and I've done other forums before but never had another forum that I felt like I had so much control over.
If I ever win the lottery, trust that I would send you a healthy donation for an entire set of new servers! But we all know that the lottery isn't too likely an option.
From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU! _________________

Can not believe it has been 4 years ,,, think im one of the only survivors from the early days aswell..
It is really amazing how far it has all come from the early days when you had to do the lot your self..
I remember the day the full editing came in, it was brilliant fun working it all out, and i remember a 30 odd page thread where i was trying to do something and it wasn't happening , but in the end i got there.
I don't have any forums as such on here anymore, but i do take full advantage of the webpage side of things , running many websites from here, the latest for a social club over in Surrey .
www.southparkconclub.co.uk
websites do not have to be all flashing and singing to get the message across, and that's what i like about the editing of them .....
Anyway its been a pleasure sticking around and trying to help as much as i can, over the last 7 mths i have slowed down , but thats due to personnel reason that have kicked me down,, but im on the up at the moment. after beginning of june i hope to be back here on a more regularly.
Cheers for all you do Admin _________________

Don't forget me Symon
In the 4 years since i've been here, i've never learned so much in such a short time. The help we get is out of this world and this is truly the best free forums out there on the internet.
Here's to the next 4 years and beyond _________________

I am a small forum with 150 members, but it is a place for neighborhood people to get together. You have done an incredible service making forum building a snap!!!! We now plan a monthly lunch and another get together, and make daily plans.
My only problem started with spam, x-rated, after posting the website name here. I now have to approve members for posting. A small glitch and we got through it fine!
THANK YOU!!!!! We are over 50 and living and loving life! Call us the old coot computer junkies! _________________ It is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain!

About 3 years ago when Eurosport gave up on their forum system I've found this place and created a small forum about Tennis. It was really small ~15 people. About 8 months I've created a forum about the Israeli National Trail for tourists from outside the country. It is working great.
Recently I've created a new forum in Hebrew for Israelies hiking the Israel National Trail, we expect thousands of new surfers each year.
Happy B-day and thanks God you are here _________________ Hike the INT

I agree with everything said. i've been here over a year now, still only got 6 members but i find it quite rewarding knowing that it's my forum and i built it to a slight extent.
Thank you Admin, just started using the support forum and the quick response took me back a little. you run a great service, you and the mods. much appreciated.

I have to say, this is probably the best site ever (not just for free forums) but of any site that I've ever found.
Great support, unobtrusive adverts, absolute freedom in terms of templates and absolute control over what you want.
My forum turns 2 years old in 8 days and though we've slowed down since the book series it is based on has ended, we're still going strong and I find the process of editing the layout extremely enjoyable. It took me a looong time to figure out the web pages (though now I know it I realise that it's actually rather easy) but the amount of html I've learned is amazing! I started out knowing the basic bold, italics and underline, and now I'm so much better.
So here's to myff, the greatest site ever!

I am very late, but happy birthday MYFF!
I'm proud to say that I've been with MyFF for more than half of it's lifespan (over two years now!) and I could not be happier with the ease of use, the quality of the system and the quality of the support I have been getting. I have recommended MyFF to so many people because I have been so happy with my forum.
All over the net I see people complaining about their free forum hosts, and how they don't have great uptime, they provide bad support, too many ads, etc. Each time I see this, I just shake my head at my computer screen and think, "why would anyone use any host besides MyFF?"
So again, happy birthday MyFF, and I hope you never die! _________________ My Forum:

A big happy birthday to myff. (Sorry for being very very late.)
Our forum has been going now for three years, and what a boon to the Toy Steam community it has become.
We now have regular get togethers, culminating in our own annual show in Lincoln.
We also host an international virtual toy steam fair that enables members from all over the world to exhibit their engines over a full weekend.
All of this would not have been possible but for myff and it's service.
On behalf of all at http://modelsteam.myfreeforum.org , I would like to thank all concerned for the help and the assistance we have had right here.
